Ehrhold, Axel; Blanchet, Aline; Hamon, Dominique.
Ifremer launched and coordinated the development of a strategy for the REBENT network (REseau BENThique) in 2000 to monitor the aftermath of the "Erika" oil spill in December 1999. Its aim is to provide consistent baseline knowledge about coastal benthic habitats and constitute a monitoring tool to detect changes at various scales over time and space. Sector-based seabed habitat mapping in shallow water (< 50 m deep), is currently being conducted throughout Brittany's coastal waters through a combination of geoacoustic marine systems and ground-truthing using biological grab sampling and seabed observations. Sedimentological and biological results on Glenan area emphasize a great diversity of subtidal habitats and marine species recognized. Sidescan...

Blanchet, Aline; Chevalier, Claire; Gaffet, Jean-dominique; Hamon, Dominique.
Following a preliminary mapping survey using a combination of acoustic techniques, spatial patterns of sedimentologic and biological characteristics of the Bay of Douarnenez were studied in 2001 from a series of grab samples and underwater video recording aiming at calibrate the acoustic facies of the bottom and at characterized them from a biological point of view. Results obtained from community structure analysis showed that four principal ecological groups dominate : The coarse sands community with Branchiostoma lanceolatum, Glycymeris glycymeris and Glycera lapidum, the fine to medium sand community with Nephtys cirrosa, Ophelia borealis and Gastrosaccus spinifer, the mixed muddy sand and gravel community with Amphiura filiformis, Edwardsia sp. and...

Blanchard, Michel; Blanchet, Aline; Gaffet, Jean-dominique; Hamon, Dominique.
The limpet (Crepidula fornicata), a gastropod mollusc belonging to the Calyptraeidae, native of the Atlantic coast of northern America, was introduced by accident on the French coasts in different steps (Blanchard, 1995, 1997). The most important, at the beginning of the 1970s, is linked to the massive importation of the Japanese oyster (Crassostrea gigas), in replacement of the Portuguese oyster (Crassostrea angulata), decimated by an epizooty. It is an opportunistic species proliferating in the neighbourhood of the main oyster basins of the English Channel and the Atlantic Ocean. Such is the case of the oyster culture areas of the Norman-Breton Gulf where stock assessments accounted for hundreds of thousands of tonnes of them (Hamon and Blanchard, 1994;...

Camus, Patrick; Compere, Chantal; Blanchet, Aline; Dimeet, Joel; Hamon, Dominique; Lacotte, Nicolas; Peleau, Michel; Lassalle, Elisabeth.
This study [...] was carried out from June 1998 to January 2000 and enabled the assessment of the scientific knowledge on the biology, ecology and distribution of the Annelida Polychaeta sedentaria: Ficopomatus enigmaticus. [...] In order to better determine the characteristics of this species' environment and development cycle, a study was conducted in the worksite of the marina of Vannes. This study, mostly biological, was completed by a technological study on the fighting techniques (antifouling paints) used against the damage made by this worm on the boat hulls. In addition, this document presents some recommendations to follow in order to limit, or stop, the development of this "pollution".

Hamon, Dominique; Blanchard, Michel; Houlgatte, Eric; Blanchet, Aline; Gaffet, Jean-dominique; Cugier, Philippe; Menesguen, Alain; Bassoullet, Philippe; Cann, Philippe; Domalain, David; Haubois, Anne-gaelle.

Multi-decadal changes in two co-occurring ophiuroid populations ArchiMer
Blanchet, Aline; Dubois, Stanislas; Hily, Christian; Rochette, Sebastien; Le Goaster, Edouard; Guillou, Monique.
Mixed beds of Ophiocomina nigra and Ophiothrix fragilis (Echinodermata, Ophiuroidea) are usually predominated by O. fragilis and are reported to be stable over time. The Bay of Brest (Brittany, France) is a highly productive ecosystem where both species co-occur in the main central part. Using a geostatistical approach, we tested for changes in O. nigra and O. fragilis density and total biomass patterns between 1987 and 2011. Our results highlighted an increase in O. nigra population size and the induction of a spatial shift of the co-occurring O. fragilis. O. nigra increased similar to 5 times in density and covered almost all the study area, while its density-dependent biomass increased similar to 3 times (22 t km(-2), ash-free dry mass) between 1987 and...

Relationships between benthic macrofauna and habitat suitability for juvenile common sole (Solea solea, L.) in the Vilaine estuary (Bay of Biscay, France) nursery ground ArchiMer
Nicolas, Delphine; Le Loch, Francois; Desaunay, Yves; Hamon, Dominique; Blanchet, Aline; Le Pape, Olivier.
Coastal and estuarine systems are among the most threatened by human activities which damage their ecological function and, in particular, their nursery role for many marine species. In this context, the protection of these vital ecosystems is a critical issue for the management of fisheries resources. To that aim, functional approaches have to be developed that make it possible to assess habitat suitability and quality. The common sole, Solea solea (L.) was selected as an indicator species to identify the features of coastal and estuarine nursery habitats in the Bay of Biscay (France). Previous studies have shown that young-of-the-year (YOY) sole are strongly dependent upon various abiotic factors, and especially bathymetry, sediment cover and the...
